Rehearsal Orchestra Edinburgh summer course August 8-15 2020
We're looking forward to returning for our 2020 summer rehearsal week in Edinburgh where it all began in 1957, when RPO viola-player Harry Legge and young RAM graduate Gillian Halse founded the orchestra during the early days of the Festival.
Still going strong over 60 years later, the Rehearsal Orchestra is a musical charity which offers musicians the invaluable experience of studying large-scale orchestral repertoire in intensive rehearsal under professional conductors without the pressure of public performance. Young professionals, students, teachers and advanced players from all walks of life attend Rehearsal Orchestra courses at weekends in London and in Edinburgh in the summer. Experienced professional players are engaged as string principals.
In Edinburgh, rehearsals take place during the day under conductors Robert Chasey and Levon Parikian (our Artistic Director) with the evenings left free to explore the City and Festival/Fringe events. The course culminates in an open rehearsal day on Friday 14th August.
“The Rehearsal Orchestra does invaluable work on the quiet and with the minimum of fuss. An extraordinary number of British musicians have worked in it, and I myself was a timpanist with the orchestra for a time." Sir Simon Rattle
"The combination of two fine conductors, being in Edinburgh at the same time as the Festival and spending time with like-minded individuals is frankly, unbeatable."
"It was a wonderful and inspiring week."
"Wonderful satisfying music making with two very special conductors who manage to get the most out of players. It is a unique learning environment for conservatoire students, professionals and experienced amateurs. It takes you out of your own musical comfort zone, and challenges you in an friendly and supportive atmosphere."
